John 4: Stop Running to Empty Wells: How to Find True Satisfaction in Christ

In John 4, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well and offers her something she never expected: living water. She had spent years searching for fulfillment in all the wrong places. She had been married five times and lived with a man who wasn’t her husband. Maybe she was looking for security, love, or identity in those relationships. But nothing satisfied her soul until she encountered Christ.
Every one of us carries a longing deep in our soul: a thirst for peace, love, purpose, belonging, and fulfillment. This longing was placed in us by God as a built-in reminder: we were made for more than this world can give. We were created for eternal life. But just like the Samaritan woman, we often run to temporary things hoping they will satisfy eternal needs.
Instead of running to Jesus, we run to:
Money and material things
Social media validation
Success and career achievements
Control
New relationships
The problem? These wells always run dry. No matter how much we drink from them, they will never fully satisfy our souls.
“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” (John 4:14)
Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that He could give her “living water.” This was in contrast to the physical water that the Samaritan woman came to the well to retrieve. That physical water would run out, and she would need to continually return to get more. But Jesus offered the woman water that would never run out—water that would become within the believer “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
So how do we stop chasing things that don’t satisfy and start drinking from the living water Jesus offers?
1. Recognize the empty wells in your life. So many of us experience burnout and emotional dryness because we’re seeking worldly sources. Something seemingly harmless like excessive screentime, overeating, or busyness steals our energy and requires constant effort to maintain. Avoiding our walk with Jesus means that we may gain the world, but end up losing everything. Ask yourself: What am I running to for fulfillment instead of Christ? Matthew 16:26
2. Bring your thirst to Jesus. The Samaritan woman didn’t have to clean up her life before coming to Jesus. She just had to accept His invitation. The same is true for us! We don’t have to fix everything first, we just have to stop hiding and come to Him. He promises to give us true rest when we are burdened with anxiety, sin, or shame. Matthew 11:28
3. Allow Him to fill us. We stay spiritually hydrated by spending time in Scripture, prayer, and worship. The more we fill ourselves with God’s truth, the less we crave the things that don’t satisfy. We must consistently focus on overcoming worldly desires that cause spiritual distance. This is an ongoing process (progressive sanctification). James 4:8
4. Let your life overflow. After encountering Jesus, the Samaritan woman ran back to her village to tell everyone about Him. Her testimony shows us that when we are saved, we’re not just forgiven, we receive new life. This changes our identity and perspective, and should motivate us to not just “exist.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
Reflection & Discussion
We all have a choice: Keep running to empty wells, or drink from the living water that never runs dry. Jesus is inviting you today. Will you accept His offer and stop running to things that can’t satisfy?
What “wells” do you tend to return to for fulfillment or validation?

Prayer: Lord, I confess that I’ve been running to things that don’t truly satisfy. Help me to stop chasing after temporary things and instead drink deeply from Your living water. Fill my heart with Your peace and satisfaction so that I no longer thirst for anything less than You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
