Verse of the Month: 2 Timothy 1:6-7
Before we step into the truth of 2 Timothy 1:7, we have to begin with the invitation found just one verse before it. In verse 6, Paul reminds Timothy there is already a gift inside of him. He urges Timothy to "fan into flame the gift of God."
This is a call to action. It's a call to:
Stir what feels dormant
Rekindle what feels weak
Step into what God has already placed within you
A God-given gift can grow quiet if it's neglected...just like a small fire. If a fire is left to itself, it will dwindle. We have to be intentional about keeping it burning. Pastor Matthew Maher said, "Believers have a responsibility to actively rekindle their spiritual gifts."
So how do we "stir up" our gift within us?
Discover the gift through prayer and the Word.
Develop the gift through practice and patience
Deploy the gift as God opens opportunities
Pastor Matthew also said people typically have either a serving gift or a speaking gift. Don't be ashamed if you have no clue what your God-given gift is. Ask God to spark creativity when you're feeling stuck. You have an open invitation to tap into the best source of inspiration (our Master Creator). James 1:5 tells us that if you lack wisdom, you can ask God for it and count on Him giving it generously to you.
Wisdom is God's guidance to know how to make the best decisions. Collaborate with God, He is eager to share his ideas with you. Have faith that He will answer you and guide you.
Example prayer: "God, what did You give me as a gift to use for Your glory?" or "How can I grow Your kingdom with my blessings?"
Questions for reflection/discussion:
Relating to my faith journey, where do I feel stagnant right now? What needs to be "rekindled"?
Do I struggle with discovering my gift, developing my gift, or deploying my gift?
Do I regularly spend private time with God outside of "corporate worship" to hear Him?
We can fan the flame of faith, or we can fan the flame of fear, but we cannot do both. As you try to stir up what God has placed within you, remember that fear does not come from God. Instead, He has given you power, love, and a sound mind. Over the next four weeks at Strength & Scripture, we'll break down what that means in verse 7.
