rooted among weeds: matthew 13:24-30

The parable of the weeds (v.24-30) is about a farmer planting good seed in his field, but an enemy secretly sows weeds among the wheat. The enemy does this at night, when people were asleep. When the servants noticed the weeds, they want to pull them up immediately, but the farmer tells them to wait because it could damage the wheat that is still growing. At harvest time, the farmer will be able to tell between the weeds and the wheat.

The parable of the weeds explained (v. 36-43)(remember, parables are earthly stories with heavenly meanings):

• Jesus explains to the disciples that He is the sower (Son of Man). This means Jesus is the one who deserves the glory, not us.

  
  

• The field is the world = the world is God's field and any environment we are placed in can be viewed as a "field" where both wheat and weeds are growing. This includes both the bigger world and the kingdom community.

  
  

• The good seed is the son of the kingdom - (refer to the Parable of the Sower- "He indeed bears fruit" Matthew 13:23)

  
  

• The weeds are the sons of the evil one and the enemy who sowed them is the devil- the enemy plants counterfeits in the world and in the kingdom community: people who claim to be Christians but actually are not.

This parable reminds us that God is purposeful. He plants us specifically and intentionally, so that we can be a part of growing the kingdom. God is the one who will do the separating at the end of the age ("the harvest is at the end of the age" vs. 39). Our job is to live a surrendered life and trust, even when we can’t see the entire field.

3. Are you engaging in a Godly community to help you grow among the weeds? Or do you tend to isolate when the weeds around you feel overwhelming?

   
   

Prayer:

Lord, help us stay focused and rooted in You. When we're tempted to focus on the weeds around us, remind us that You are the gardener and You are always at work. Teach us to trust in Your timing, especially when we can't see the entire plan. Amen.
