"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind." -2 Timothy 1:7
This letter from Paul to Timothy was meant to encourage Timothy to step up to the plate, take his ministry seriously, and realize that the Holy Spirit provides divine resources for him to apply his gift. Timothy needs encouragement as he is about to step into a leadership role to:
-appoint qualified leaders (elders, deacons)
-defend the gospel against heresy
-set an example for others
While we may not have the same responsibilities as Timothy, we can still tap into God's power. As mothers, it's so easy to feel stretched thin and to try and convince ourselves that we can do it all! But in reality, we weren't meant to carry it all. We have to intentionally and consistency follow God's guidance and trust that His strength carries us when we are weak. Trusting and obeying God is how we tap into His power.
2 Corinthians 4:7 reminds us that we are "jars of clay"- earthly vessels, and containers for God's light and glory. Jars of clay are fragile, and not very durable compared to metal. Yet God chose to put His glory and light into everyday people. The power clearly belongs to God and not us.
Prayer is the key to becoming more aware of the Holy Spirit's power, presence, and to recognizing His voice. Here are a few prayers to help you surrender to the Holy Spirit:
"Welcome, Holy Spirit" - inviting him into your life, home, and ministry (motherhood is ministry)! Do not be ashamed of His presence. Stand by your convictions, even if no one else understands it.
"I trust You, Holy Spirit" - be willing to obey the Holy Spirit's leading and guidance rooted in the Word.
"I love you Holy Spirit" - expressing your love for Him (not just for His gifts or power) cultivates an atmosphere of intimacy and glory in your life.
"Help me, Holy Spirit" - admit your inability to do things in your own strength and surrender your battle with control and anxiety.
Your identity is rooted in what God has already placed inside of you. Fear is not your source. God has already given you the power.
Reflection/discussion questions:
What has God already placed in me that I'm not fully walking in?
How can I rely on God's power within me to do His will?
