planted by water: psalm 1:2-3

"But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers." - Psalm 1:2-3

Finding "delight" means finding joy, satisfaction, and pleasure in God's teachings and having a deep love for God's Word. Christians should meditate on God's word rather than just read or hear it and forget it. But too often, we read God's word and then continue living for the world. We don't treat it as our daily nourishment required for survival.

A tree planted by streams of water is strong, stable, bears fruit, and has deep roots to withstand storms. Water is the ultimate source of life for a tree, so to be planted by water is to have a regular supply of life itself.

Motherhood can leave us feeling drained as we're constantly pouring out for others. We joke about "surviving" and just pushing through in seasons that feel dry. But our strength isn't found in trying harder or doing more, it's found in staying connected to God, our source of life. We can't survive the storms without God, and to know God we have to continuously allow Him to nourish us. God wants to capture our hearts with His word.

Reflection/Discussion Questions:

  • What currently helps you stay rooted (connected) to God throughout your week?

  • Position determines production. Are you planted by streams of water, or is your environment making it difficult to receive daily nourishment?

  • What is one simple way you can "plant yourself by the water" this week: five minutes of prayer, doing a verse study, reading a devotional and verse each morning, etc.?
