fear: what's holding you back?

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind." -2 Timothy 1:7
In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul encourages Timothy to be bold using the gifts God has given him: because God has given him a spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind...not fear. Paul saw the timidity in Timothy and wanted him to know that this fear wasn't from God.
Fear shows up in different ways for all of us. For some, it shows up when we have to speak in front of others, lead others, confront others, or step outside of our comfort zones in some way. We may know what our gifts are (speaking or serving in some capacity), but we're too afraid to develop or deploy it. Gifts flourish when we surrender them to God.
For a lot of us, fear can sound like:
"What will people think of me?"
"I'm scared to trust God with this."
"I'm not good enough."
"I'm not important enough."
"No one cares what I have to say."
When we stay silent, hidden, or too afraid to step out in obedience, we can miss opportunities to impact someone's life. If we're more concerned with people's opinions than God's calling, then fear is leading us instead of faith.
What if your invitation changed someone's life? What if the text you almost didn't send reminded another mom she's not alone? What if that verse that you shared inspired another mom to give her anxiety to God?
As believers, we're called to reflect Christ and be the light in a dark world (Ephesians 5:7-9). We can't be the light if we stay isolated. God called believers to be obedient, not understood. Obedience can look like small steps, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts and actions. How can you step out of fear and into faith and obedience?
Reflection/discussion questions:
Where is fear showing up in my life right now?
What am I avoiding because I'm afraid of the opinions of others?
Where might God be asking me to trust Him more?
How can I share the good news of Jesus with my gifts, talents, and abilities?
