abide in the vine: john 15:4-5

Rooted in faith continued: John 15:4-5 is an invitation to swap self-reliance for a deep, ongoing relationship with Jesus. Jesus uses the metaphor of a grapevine to illustrate that He is the true vine, and the branches who abide in Him are the truly saved: they have a real and vital connection to the Savior. A branch has no life or ability to grow on its own; its power comes entirely from staying attached to the root.
What does it mean to abide in Jesus?
"Abide in me": The phrase abiding in Christ is about an intimate, close relationship, and not just a superficial acquaintance. It means maintaining an active, daily connection with Christ. Do you have an abiding relationship with Him or do you treat Him as an accessory to your life?
How do we abide in Jesus? To help us, God has given us various “means of grace,” which are simply disciplines that help us to live in this truth.
We express our dependence on Christ’s power by going to his Word—by reading it, studying it, meditating on it, memorizing it—drawing upon its comfort, its truth, and its guidance. Through that Word our minds are transformed and renewed (Rm. 12:1). If Christ is to dwell in us, so must his Word (Jn. 15:7; Col. 3:16) - C.S. Lewis.
In response to that Word we must also go to God in prayer. Wasn’t this the constant practice of Jesus himself? He recognized his own dependence on the Father (“I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.” [John 8:28]), and his life of prayer was a visible expression of that dependence.
Obedience: Jesus said that we abide in His love by keeping His commandments, particularly the instructions to believe in Him and to love one another.
Fellowship with other believers is a means by which we experience our union with Christ. Interaction with one another becomes a means of engaging with Christ himself. God uses others to encourage, sharpen, and strengthen us (Hebrews 10:24-25). Healthy branches grow outward, but stay connected.
Spiritual Fruit: Just as a branch connected to a vine bears fruit, allowing Jesus to abide in us produces the natural outflow of the Spirit's traits (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Core Reality: "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We simply can't grow spiritually while being disconnected to Christ: running from Him, ignoring Him, or treating Him as an accessory or side habit. We need Him in all aspects of our lives.

Application Activity:
Draw a simple vine with branches on a piece of paper.
At the vine: write one way you want to stay connected to God this week.
On the branches: write the names of 2-3 people God may be calling you to encourage, serve, or pray for.
On the fruit: write one fruit of the Spirit you want God to cultivate more deeply in your life this week.
